Dubai: Dubai Parks and Resorts has started construction work on the first Six Flags theme park in the Middle East, with the 2.6 billion dirham ($707 million) attraction set to open in late 2019.
The new park will include 27 rides and attractions across six themed zones, including Thrillseeker Plaza, Magic Mountain, Fiesta Texas, Great Escape, Great Adventure and Great America, according to a press statement released on Sunday.
The plans include three world record breaking rides, six rollercoasters and a 350-metre River Rapids ride.The fourth theme park in the Dubai Parks and Resorts portfolio, Six Flags Dubai will be set over an area of 2 million square feet, with 1.5 million square feet remaining for future development.
The main part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts project, which will include Motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai and Legoland Dubai, will open in October this year.
The Dubai firm, through its parent firm Meraas Holding, holds the exclusive rights to develop and operate Six Flags-branded theme parks across the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.
There had been speculation Saudi Arabia was in talks to build its own Six Flags theme parks, as part of aims to diversify its tourism offering, and the Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with the company's executives while on a recent trip to the United States.
Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who owns Meraas, said last week Dubai Parks and Resorts would waive its right to exclusivity in Saudi Arabia, Reuters reported, paving the way for the development of Six Flags parks in the kingdom.
