Egypt - Nearly 16 global and local consortiums have been technically qualified to compete for the implementation of Abu Qir Metro in Alexanderia, sources at the Ministry of Transport told Al Mal Newspaper.

A consortium comprised Elsewedy Electric (SWDY) and Siemens as well as the consortium consisting of Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors are among the qualified alliances, the sources noted.

Moreover, an alliance comprised Greece’s Archirodon Group and a Chinese company, in addition to, the Chinese consortium of Norinco and CRIG will technically compete for the project, the sources pointed out.

An Italian consortium under the name of WSPHT, as well as an Indian consortium of Larsen & Toubro, are among the qualified alliances to carry out the project.

An Egyptian-French consortium led by Alstom has been also qualified to compete for the bid.

Furthermore, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, China’s NORINCO International, Japan’s Hitachi, and Russia’s Metrowagonmash Demikhovo Engineering Plant has been announced as qualified to compete for the bid.

A limited bid is set to be launched to award the project at a cost of €1.5 billion, the sources highlighted.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of transport is targeting to turn Abu Qir railway in Alexandria to underground extending over 21.7 kilometers in 2022.
