AMMAN — The Kingdom’s food sector improved by 40 per cent, thanks to the government’s plan to reopen sectors and reduce curfew hours, food sector representative at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce Raed Hamadeh said on Wednesday.

Hamadeh stressed that despite price fluctuations, the Kingdom’s reserve of food is at safe levels, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Reviewing the challenges that face the sector, Hamadeh called for exempting all food items from taxes and duties and enhancing the public-private sector partnership to develop a clear strategy to enhance the country’s stocks of basic commodities and address any fluctuation.

Jordan’s food imports reach $4 billion a year, according to Petra. The food sector is comprised of about 70,000 institutions that offer jobs for 250,000 workers and comprises 30 per cent of the trade sector.
