The UAE’s major carriers Emirates and Etihad have confirmed they have halted flights to and from Saudi Arabia.

The news comes after the Gulf state decided to close its borders and suspended all international commercial flights following the discovery of a new variant of coronavirus.

The new virus strain had earlier prompted the United Kingdom (UK) to implement a series of tighter restrictions. Scientists have warned that the new variant spreads faster than others.

“Due to the closure of borders as directed by the Saudi authorities, Emirates will be suspending flights to and from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia until December 27,” a spokesperson told Zawya.

“We regret any inconvenience caused. Affected customers should contact their travel agent or the Emirates contact centre for rebooking options,” said the airline.

Abu Dhabi-based carrier Etihad also said on Monday it has suspended its services to and from the kingdom “with immediate effect”.

“Etihad Airways will temporarily suspend its passenger services between Abu Dhabi and all destinations in Saudi Arabia until further notice, based on the directives of the Saudi authorities to limit the spread of COVID-19,” an Etihad spokesperson told Zawya.

“The safety of its customers and crew is Etihad’s highest priority and we regret any inconvenience the suspension may cause.”
