Doha 21st  January 2015

In parallel with the 24th Men's Handball World Championship currently being held in Doha, Aspetar will host the Conference on New Sports Medicine Concepts in Handball at the Aspire Ladies Sports Hall on 23rd and 24th January 2015.

To ensure facilitation of an academic and clinical exchange on vital topics within this field, Aspetar's scientific committee and the International Handball Federation's (IHF) medical committee have put together a cutting edge programme for the attendees, including a distinguished panel of professional and world renowned speakers led by Dr Hassan Mustafa, President of IHF.

Dr Khalifa Al Kuwari, Director General, Aspetar, said: "This event has added to Aspetar's series of initiatives aimed at developing new sports medicine treatments.

By organising this international conference we are contributing to the search for knowledge and facilitating the exchange of experiences between specialists from different countries in the field of sports medicine, thereby helping to improve the methods of prevention and the treatment of handball players".

Alongside IHF and the Qatar Handball Committee (QHC) 2015, Aspetar is honoured to present the Conference on New Sports Medicine Concepts in Handball with the aim of providing greater access for attendees to increase their professional development and implement the latest clinical treatments and approaches. These, in turn, will increase understanding of the main concepts behind handball injuries, and how these concepts are relevant to the medical profession around the world.

Dr Philippe Landreau, Chief of Surgery, Aspetar, and Conference Co-Chairman said: "This congress is a unique opportunity for the global sport and exercise medicine community to meet face to face in the ideal environment that Qatar provides on the side line of the 24th Men's Handball World Championship. It is a premier international conference for those interested in the clinical aspects of handball injuries, and it will discuss many important topics".

Several critical handball sports medicine issues will be discussed during the event, such as:

·         'Elbow injuries', presented by Dr Nebojsa Popovic, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Aspetar.

·         'Handball demands and players characteristics: training, osteoarticular and muscular constraints in handball', presented by Dr Karim Chamari, Research Scientist, Aspetar, and Jacques Prioux (France).

·   'Epidemiology in handball injuries', presented by Grethe Myklebust  (Norway)

·         'Dental injuries', presented by Dr Mohammed Alsaey, Director of Sports Dentistry, Aspetar and Peter Fine (UK).

·         'Cartilage repair in handball: current methods and future trends', presented by Mats Bittberg (Sweden).

·         'How to prepare handball players', presented by Marco Cardinale (Aspire, Qatar)

The afternoon sessions will consist of educational and interactive workshops at a very high level of expertise. The first day will highlight shoulder, hand, wrist, knee and ankle injuries, while the second day will showcase muscle injuries, groin injuries, injury prevention and doping control.

Aspetar, one of the world's leading hospitals in the field of sports medicine, is providing internationally renowned services to the world's leading athletes throughout the 24th Men's Handball World Championship, thereby ensuring cutting edge medical coverage as well as furthering research and understanding by conducting an Injury and Illness Surveillance Study during the championship.
