Illegal horse stables and unlicensed labour accommodation were among the violations at a private business licensed as a plant nursery registered yesterday.

A make-shift landfill piled with agricultural, household and plastic waste in addition to bicycles, furniture, and wooden planks were also found on the property which belongs to the Jaffari Waqf (Endowments) Directorate in Shakhoora.

The property, which shares a wall with a private home, is a haven for pests in addition to causing catastrophic environmental damage and pollution, said Northern Municipal Council chairman Ahmed Al Kooheji.

Violations were registered during a surprise inspection visit organised by the council in collaboration with various government authorities and ministries.

“We received multiple complaints from neighbours due to animal noises, foul odours and pollution caused by the property which is just supposed to be operate as a nursery and nothing else,” said Mr Al Kooheji.

“However, the property has horse stables – which is illegal in a residential area – and an unlicensed labour accommodation.”

Mr Al Kooheji said the council was keen to co-operate with the directorate and create sustainable projects on these properties.

Meanwhile, a Civil Defence Officer – who inspected the illegal labour accommodation – highlighted life-threatening conditions such as improperly stored gas cylinders.

“Gas cylinders are being stored improperly inside the accommodation, while the kitchen is open,” he told the GDN.

“There are no fire extinguishers or alarms in the single-floor accommodation with up to three people living in each room.

“The doors and roof are not built with fire-resistant materials which is dangerous to people living on the property or nearby.”

Directorate officials pointed out it has recently set up an investigative team, waiting for judicial powers.
