ArabFinance: Egypt is currently the second largest producer of sun-dried tomatoes worldwide, according to a Central Administration for Plant Quarantine statement.

There are some 17,000 feddans in Luxor governorate that are planted with tomatoes to be later dried and exported, according to the agriculture ministry’s unit.

Egypt follows Italy in producing sun-dried tomatoes, yet it export to the European country, as well as to France, Argentina, and Brazil, the statement added.

Last September, Minister of International Cooperation Rania al Mashat visited a sun drying tomato unit project in Baghdadi village in Luxor. The development aims to raise the market value of Egypt’s crops and create sustainable communities through integrating gender equality.

The project is expected to contribute to protecting food security by reducing crop losses while increasing local farmers’ income by 30%, according to Al Mashat.
