An initiative to plant 1,000 trees along the 16th December Highway has been completed.

They included 843 bougainvillea plants, 120 cassia trees and 37 neem trees.

The location was selected due to its proximity to the main school district in Isa Town, with the hope that it will increase green areas, improve air quality, promote a healthier environment for the local community, and help combat climate change.

The project was led by regional asset manager, broker and investment bank SICO in co-operation with the Southern Municipality and the National Initiative for Agricultural Development.

“Promoting environmental preservation and sustainable practices in Bahrain is a key priority for SICO, in order to foster a healthy, clean and safe environment for the community at large,” said chief executive Najla Al Shirawi.

“We are constantly working to identify and implement new initiatives that will see us minimise our carbon footprint and integrate environmental awareness and sustainability into the fabric of our operations.”

In 2018, SICO launched the Go Green initiative to raise awareness on practices that both the bank and employees can adopt to reduce its carbon footprint.
