Etihad’s first commercial flight to Israel, which departed from Abu Dhabi International Airport at 10:30 am on Tuesday, has landed in Tel Aviv with a high-profile delegation on board.
“Launching our first commercial scheduled operation is not only an important milestone for Etihad but a significant moment for the UAE and Israel,” said Tony Douglas, group chief executive officer of the airline.
Onboard the aircraft were officials from the UAE, including Mohamed Mahmoud Al Khaja, ambassador of the UAE to the state of Israel.
The launch of Etihad’s service to Tel Aviv comes in the wake of the peace accord between the UAE and Israel. The so-called Abraham Accords have fostered bilateral economic, political, diplomatic and cultural cooperation between the two states since they were signed last September.
“Since the signing of the Abraham Accords… our two countries have worked together to embark upon a new and dynamic era of cooperation,” said Al Khaja in his remarks upon arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport.
“As our countries recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have much to look forward to in commercial, diplomatic, technological, health and tourism exchanges.”
Etihad has gradually resumed international passenger flights across its network worldwide since COVID-19 restrictions eased last year.
