New radars and smart cameras have been installed on five most accident-prone roads in Sharjah, the police have revealed. Additional police patrols also have been deployed on the roads -- Mleiha, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed, Emirates, Al Ittihad and Sharjah-Al Dhaid.

A top officer revealed this as the police unveiled a plan to reduce traffic fatalities to zero by 2021.

The police have managed to halve the number of fatalities on these roads in 2018. Seven people lost their lives in road accidents in 2018 as compared to 14 in 2017.

Lt.-Col Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, director of traffic and patrol department, said the police plan involves studying the causes of the accidents and implementing effective solutions to prevent them. The police found that most of the accidents were caused by speeding, tyre bursts and driver fatigue.

A major part of the plan is to launch awareness campaigns and sensitising motorists about the dangers of violations. The police's three campaigns in 2018 against speeding, jaywalking and lane discipline helped reduce the number of accidents in the fourth quarter of 2018, Lt.-Col Al Naqbi added.
