GENEVA - The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held an emergency session on Tuesday in Geneva to discuss the situation in Myanmar, especially the killing and persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the northern Rakhine State, which resulted in 600,000 people fleeing to Bangladesh to seek refuge, SPA reported.
The session was held at the request of Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh, with the support of 73 countries.
The UNHRC appointed a fact-finding mission to look into allegations of severe human rights violations in Myanmar. The mission reported that Myanmar’s army has committed widespread human rights violations against the Rohingya Muslims in northern Rakhine State, including killings, rapes, minelaying, destruction of property and livelihoods, torture, attacks on mosques, and forced displacement, which are crimes against humanity and amount to genocide.
