The Department of Economic Development Abu Dhabi announced the launch of the second edition of the Technology Innovation Pioneers (TIP) Summit 2020, held at the New York University Abu Dhabi Campus on 4-5 February 2020, to pronounce the award-winning inventors in the fields of healthcare, EnergyTech and EnviroTech.

The announcement was made during a special ceremony organized by the Ministry of Economy and Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development at the Youth Hub Abu Dhabi, in the auspicious presence of H. E. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori - Minister of Economy in the UAE, who was joined by H.E. Mohammed Ali al Hammadi, Chairman of the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi; H.E. Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohamed Al Hamed, the Chairman of the Department of Health of Abu Dhabi; H.E. Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy and a

member of the Executive Council; and H.E Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

His Excellency Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economy, said: “This summit constitutes a landmark stage in our continuous efforts to devise technical and scientific solutions to the challenges facing the economic sectors - sectors upon which our national economy depends. Noting that the summit embodies the role of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development and that of its strategic partners in harnessing technology and innovation to achieve sustainable economic development.

H.E. Al Mansoori added: “To fully realize the potential of technology, we will need the concerted effort across the Government, the industry, the private sector, the academia and our research institutions. This year’s summit will be an invaluable opportunity for all the players to share and exchange their insights and prepare the UAE for an incredible new decade.”

Mohammed Al-Shurafa said in a speech during the ceremony the Technology Innovation Pioneers (TIP) is an initiative launched by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and the Ministry of Economy in line with the “National Strategy for Innovation” aimed at crowning Abu Dhabi the forerunner in the fields of technology and innovation, and providing effective solutions that address the most pressing challenges in various sectors and areas of life to achieve sustainable economic development.

Al-Shurafa added, our aim to organizing this summit annually is to shed light on the strategic move towards increasing awareness of the importance of innovation in the healthcare, environmental technology and energy technology sectors in the United Arab Emirates, the region and the world at large.

Al-Shurafa further said that the TIP Summit 2020 will offer a global platform, which will bring together an elite of inventors, innovators and decision makers in a creative dialogue for the future global innovation ecosystem showcasing the investment opportunities and potential in the various innovations in the sectors of Healthcare, EnergyTech and Envirotech.

H.E Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Managing Director of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund said: "We are proud to

be part of this summit which highlights Abu Dhabi’s leading efforts to support innovative solutions in response to global environmental challenges. The inaugural TIP Envirotech focuses on three challenges which are important both at the local and global level: clean energy, ocean conservation and single-use plastics.

H.E added "The UAE must now take the necessary steps to address those challenges domestically, to mitigate and adapt to climate change, make our oceans more resilient, and avoid using plastic as a single-use product. Domestically, we need a rapid transformation of our economy, to a green economy model, which is resource efficient, decouples growth from emissions, avoids waste, is competitive and knowledge-based and provides a platform to develop and export green technology, products and services".

HE Al Mubarak noted that "Achieving these ambitious goals will not happen on its own and will need a focused and determined effort driven by a partnership of the different sectors of the economy - government, business, academy, investors, advocacy organizations and various other communities. We will all need to play our part to strengthen the UAE innovation ecosystem.”

Mr. Salem Bin Shabib, chairman of Innovation Committee, presented the TIP initiative highlights that the TIP initiative has achieved a great success locally and internationally since its inception in 2017. It has resulted in advancing the careers of the 2018 winners, Mr. Ahmed Al Hammadi and Mr. Wissam Kamal Al Din, among 24 others, in the “field Healthcare "succeeding in turning their innovation in the healthcare sector into a marketable product.”

Mr. Bin Shabib pointed out that that the initiative has so far received 4072 registrations from 90 countries, with 30 winning submissions across the healthcare and environment fields. Each winning applicant has had the unique opportunity to network with local and international with industry-specific leaders, key influencers, and decisions makers.

It is worth noting that the summit will witness the participation of ministers, chairmen of departments, senior officials from local and federal government agencies in the UAE, leaders of major companies, investors, senior policy makers, chairmen of international organizations and academia from all over the world to promote the concept of innovation for a better tomorrow,

TIP Summit will play host to more than 35 panel sessions, 16 workshops and network with over 50 experts and investors from all over the world and it is expected to welcome over 2000 participants and up to 150 start-ups from the region and the world.
