The driver of the bus, which crashed on a height restriction barrier and left 17 passengers dead, drove on the Muscat-Dubai route frequently, his son has told Khaleej Times. The Omani driver, Saeed Mohammed, is recuperating in a stable condition.

According to the police, he suffered moderate injuries in the accident that happened near Al Rashidiya metro station on Thursday.

"There was a curtain on the windshield to protect the driver's eyes from the sun during the day, due to which my father failed to notice the signboard that said only cars were allowed on Al Rashidiya exit road. He saw the height restriction barrier, but could not stop the bus in time," his son, Haytham, said.

According to the police, the driver was driving over the 40kmph speed limit on the road.

The impact was such that the barrier tore through the left side of the bus.
