The Dubai Police on Saturday warned the motorists against driving at high speeds on major highways, following the bus accident that claimed 17 lives in Dubai on Thursday, June 6.

"Driving at high speeds causes the most serious traffic accidents. We advise you to adhere to the legal speed limits," the police said on Twitter.

A total of 17 people died and nine others were severely hurt when a tourist bus crashed into a road height restriction barrier in Dubai on Thursday evening.

The barrier was 2.2 metres high, and vehicles above that road restriction cannot travel on the road. The Oman-registered bus is operated by Mwasalat, a government-owned company founded in 1972, and was used to transport passengers between Dubai and Muscat.

Till Friday evening, 13 victims were identified by their relatives.

Following the accident, the police called on motorists to drive with caution and to adhere to the traffic rules.

According to UAE traffic laws, a driver exceeding maximum speed limit by more than 60 kilometres per hour can be slapped with a Dh1,000 fine and lose the car to impound.

In another tweet, Dubai Police advised commuters to wear the seatbelt. "Always wear your seatbelt."
