A new clinic dedicated to providing medical treatment to low-income residents of Manama has been launched.

The Zwemer Clinic is based at the American Mission Hospital (AMH), in Manama. It was opened during a ceremony by Capital Governor Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa and US Ambassador Justin Siberell.

The clinic is named after missionary, traveller and scholar Samuel Marinus Zwemer, who laid the foundations for AMH in the 19th Century.

It was during a visit to Bahrain in 1893 that Mr Zwemer first opened a medical dispensary in the old suq.

This led to the development of the Mason Memorial Hospital in 1903, which transitioned into AMH in 1926.

Meanwhile, the AMH will be opening its Riffa Clinic opposite The Walk later this month.

Supreme Council of Health president Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa will officially inaugurate the Riffa Medical and Dental Centre at the Callidus Centre at 9am on March 21, in the presence of Mr Siberell and distinguished guests.
