BEIRUT - Energy Minister Cesar Abi Khalil said Saturday that any prospective proceeds from Lebanon’s oil and gas exploitation, once it commences, will be used to accelerate the development of renewable energy in the country. “Our plan is to use revenues from oil and gas to accelerate our renewable energy development,” a tweet from Abi Khalil’s official account quoted him as saying.

In another tweet, including a picture of the minister at the eighth conference of the International Renewable Energy Agency in Abu Dhabi, Abi Khalil said Lebanon had officially become the 153rd member of the organization. He also said the Lebanese delegation had succeeded in getting support for a study, titled “National Preparedness for Renewable Energy in Lebanon,” that he said would put Lebanon on the agency’s “world map,” and would attract “global investments.”

Abi Khalil said on Twitter that he had met with the director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, Mohamed Ali Alhakim, “after which a project was announced about renewable energy in rural areas.”

At the start of 2017, Abi Khalil said renewable energy in 2020 would represent 12 percent of the country’s total electricity production, up from the current 5.63 percent. On Dec. 15, Cabinet approved licenses for a consortium of three international oil companies to commence oil and gas exploration in 2019.
