IsDB approves $453million infrastructure projects for Suriname, Turkey, Uganda, Tunisia and Jordan

The Board of Executive Directors (BED) of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has approved various infrastructure projects for five member countries of IsDB, totaling US $453 million. The approval was given by the BED ahead of the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors (17-18 May 2017) in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The beneficiary countries are Tunisia, Suriname, Turkey, Uganda and Jordan:

Tunisia: ($78.7m)-Water project in Tunisia.

Suriname: ($35 m)-Affordable Housing Project (LISP III).

Turkey: ($200m)-Clean Energy and Energy Infrastructure Programme.

Uganda: ($60m) Local Economic Growth Project.

Jordan: ($79m)-Emergency Health Project.

“Building the infrastructure of our member countries is important in order to accelerate development activities. With infrastructure development comes other benefits like providing employment opportunities and reducing poverty. The theme of our Annual is on youth economic empowerment. Infrastructure projects provide significant opportunities for our youth,” said Dr. Bandar Hajjar, IsDB President.

The BED also approved three Special Assistance Projects worth US $580,000 for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kenya and Rwanda:

Completion of Gnojnice Elementary & Secondary School in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($200,000).

Construction of Maalamin Health Centre, Garissa County, Kenya ($200,000).

Extension of the Technical Secondary School (GS AIPER), Kigali, Rwanda ($180,000).

The Annual Meeting of the IsDB brings the 57 finance ministers of IsDB member countries, regional organizations, development partners and civil society.
