The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has issued a decision to withdraw the French-made Lactalis infant milk products from UAE markets due to salmonella contamination.
The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and the municipalities of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah will implement the withdrawal of the product from the market.
The decision is based on the findings of a technical report following the warning issued by the French Directorate General of Health (DGS) regarding the contamination of the infant milk, which had been exported to 30 countries including the UAE. The company, Lactalis, proceeded to withdraw and recall its products after 20 babies under the age of six months were found to be contaminated with salmonella.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment emphasised that all food products in the UAE, whether locally produced or imported, are safe for consumption as they are strictly monitored by the ministry and relevant local authorities.
The MOCCAE reaffirmed that there is a constant coordination with relevant authorities in the UAE to ensure the safety of all imported and traded food products. The ministry reiterated that all imported and traded products undergo a strict control system in accordance with the best international practices at all stages of the food chain — including conducting of laboratory tests as per the risk assessment system, and an early notification system of foods that pose a risk to consumers’ health.
Baby milk maker Lactalis and French authorities have ordered a global recall of millions of products over fears of salmonella bacteria contamination.
The French company, one of the world’s largest dairy groups, said it was warned by health authorities in France that 26 infants have become sick since December 1.
According to a list published on the French health ministry’s website, the recall affects customers in countries around the world, including Britain and Greece in Europe, Morocco and Sudan in Africa, Peru and Colombia in South America and Pakistan, Bangladesh and China in Asia. The United States, a major market for Lactalis, is not affected.
