Aqaba, Jordan - Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the preferred gateway to the Levant region and beyond, is proud to announce the release of its 10th annual sustainability report, marking a decade of continuous and comprehensive efforts to make the terminal more sustainable.

 Each year, ACT focuses on new opportunities to improve upon their environmental and sustainable socio-economic impact while continuing to operate the terminal with greater capacity and efficiency. Despite facing challenges as a result of the global pandemic, 2020 was a highly productive year for the Terminal, which achieved its highest-ever throughput of 857,283 TEUs and served a total of 327,351 trucks. Throughout the year, ACT maintained its energy intensity at 0.2 GJ/TEU, reduced GHG emissions intensity by 3%, and increased recycled waste to 34%.

Additionally, in 2020, ACT won the ‘Occupational Health and Safety Excellence’ Award from the Social Security Corporation and the ‘Way of Working (WOW) Hero’ Award from APMT for its continuous improvement and the effective implementation of Lean Management through its KAIZEN programs.

ACT is based on its strong foundation of an expertly trained and nationalized workforce and strict adherence to the highest safety standards. The workforce consists of 99.8% Jordanian employees who undergo thorough training and development programs and enjoy generous benefits covering housing, transportation, education, healthcare on top of competitive salaries.

Furthermore, ACT has developed an extensive CSR strategy which focuses on ensuring local community and citizens prosper and aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Jordan 2025 National Vision strategy. The company’s approach focuses on education, healthcare, caring for the environment, donations, sponsorships, and community engagement. Over the last five years, ACT has contributed around JOD 500,000 towards community programs. In 2020 alone, ACT contributed directly JOD 64,322 towards its 17 CSR initiatives and projects, and indirectly with double the number, with the aim of supporting its more than 7,000 local beneficiaries to create a lasting impact on community development and socio-economic prosperity.
