Abu Dhabi, UAE - Celebrating outstanding innovation in the fields of applied design and architecture, Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) presented the Total Design Commission to emerging designers, Hind Bin Demaithan and Saeed Al Madani, in the presence of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance; H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of Executive Affairs Authority and CEO of Mubadala Development Company; H.E. Huda Ibrahim Alkhamis, Founder of ADMAF and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival and Hatem Nuseibeh, Total Country Chair in the UAE. The award recognises outstanding innovation and achievement by young Emiratis in the fields of interior design, industrial design, graphic design and architecture, with the 2019 award themed around Applied Arts.

The winning installation, titled You Can’t Force a Flower to Bloom in Darkness, will be displayed at Emirates Palace throughout Abu Dhabi Festival 2019, while both winners will receive an international professional development opportunity tailored to their chosen careers.

Huda Ibrahim Alkhamis, Founder of ADMAF and Artistic Director of Abu Dhabi Festival, said: “At ADMAF, we understand the importance of design practice and how essential it is to the cultural and creative industries. It enables and develops a sustainable knowledge economy and reflects our beliefs in developing the capacities of the youth by encouraging them to excel, contributing to our cultural scene with their creativity. The Total Design Award, in partnership with Total, recognises and rewards the excellence of Emirati young designers and engineers in the fields of applied arts, design arts and architecture, as a contribution to the national identity and aesthetic values of the UAE's overall creative scene.”

Established in 2014, the competitive award nurtures potential and encourages creative practice by providing a launch pad for emerging designers and architects across the UAE. Previous winners of the Design Commission include Amira Al Zaarooni, for Jood Volunteering Scheme, Mona Al Ali for Enlightenment House, Badria Al Maazmi and Mariam Abdullah for Neighborhood Community Centre, Mina Watan Al Sheikhly, Saba Rahanjam, and Meera Rashid Al Mualla for designing the ADMAF Pavilion at Abu Dhabi Art, inspired by Zaha Hadid, and Lamya Alshami and Hanan Alkaf for designing the ADMAF Pavilion at Abu Dhabi Art, inspired by Philip Stark.
