Several major projects in Kuwait, including islands development, the Silk City, and the rail network, are lagging behind due to the Coronavirus pandemic and other factors, a newspaper in the OPEC member has reported.

A survey of project execution conducted by the Supreme Council for Planning and Development found that 15 large projects are suffering from delays, and they cover transport, construction, health and other sectors, the Kuwaiti Arabic language daily Alanba said, citing Council sources.

Two multi-billion-dollar projects for the construction of the Silk City and the development of five island have not even got off the ground with 'zero execution rate' it said.

Only around 1.5 percent of the nation-wide rail network has been completed compared with a targeted execution rate of 23 percent, the report said.

Other delayed projects comprise Al-Mutlaa Residential City in Central Kuwait, Kabd Solid Waste in the Northern Jahra Governorate, the Labour City in Jahra, and Kuwait Airport expansion, the report added.
