Saudi Arabia, Riyadh: Following the conclusion of the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference, COP26 in Glasgow last Friday, the British Embassy in Riyadh held an event to celebrate climate action with sustainability leaders in Saudi Arabia.

In cooperation with the Saudi Green Initiative, the event brought together representatives from all of society - government, NGOs, universities, private sector, entrepreneurs and KOLs, to reflect on the conversations and outcomes of the two-week summit, on the successes achieved, and the challenges ahead.

At the event - which was free of single use plastics, with salad and vegetables largely sourced from the Residence Kitchen garden - attendees viewed a short film on COP26 and the programmes under the Saudi Green Initiative.  Hejaz Ploggers, a volunteer group whose mission is to contribute to building an environmentally-inspired society and who launched the Najd Ploggers at the event, led the guests in creating a mural composed from recycled materials with guests scribing individual climate and environment pledges into the artwork. Attendees at the event tweeted out their pledge using #Togetherforourplanet (__#). Saudi coffee entrepreneur, Osamah Alawwam from the Roasting House spoke about sustainable coffee; inspiring conversations on how organisations can embed sustainability in their models.

At COP26, all 197 Parties agreed the Glasgow Climate Pact, committing when they meet next year for COP27, Sharm el Sheikh, to revisit their 2030 emission reduction targets, in acknowledgement of the most recent science and the need to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. If global temperatures rise by more than 1.5 degrees, severe environmental effects will be felt, such as millions more people being exposed to extreme heat, the loss of many more lives and livelihoods damaged.

The British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Neil Crompton said, “Climate change is impacting upon us all.  Tonight, I am delighted to celebrate increased climate action around the globe, prior to and during COP26, and the Glasgow Climate Pact, and to meet young Saudi women and men who are committed to climate action and to sustaining and regenerating the environment, who share in the vision of a greener planet for current and future generations.

At COP26 the UK brought countries together to agree a comprehensive, ambitious and balanced outcome that takes forward coordinated climate action.  As part of a global conversation on tackling climate change, we have been working closely with the Saudi government, businesses, civil society groups, educational institutions. With clear outcomes from COP26 about how nations and individuals alike need to strive to limit and adapt to the effects of climate change, we have the opportunity to make a real difference. Together we must take the steps required to tackle this global threat. ”

“In March, His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince said that it was a false choice between developing the economy and protecting the environment.  Last month, at the Saudi Green Initiative Inaugural Conference, the Crown Prince pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2060.  It was a landmark moment. The UK remains committed to working with Saudi Arabia and the international community on implementing the COP26 agenda and making a green future a reality .”
