Dubai is poised to become one of the healthiest and happiest cities in the world. A couple of days ago it imposed heavy taxes on tobacco products, and energy and carbonated drinks. It wasn't meant to fatten the exchequer, but to enhance the health of its people. The latest initiative - Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid's '30 minute x 30 days' Dubai Fitness Challenge - requires Dubai residents to champion a health movement that commits to 30 minutes of daily activity for 30 days. It's yet another visionary initiative by the Dubai government, bearing in mind that only a healthy city can be a happy city. Starting October 20, the challenge aimed at making Dubai the most active city will encompass all forms of activity - from walking, team sports, intense fitness regimes, paddle-boarding and aerobics to football, yoga and cycling.

So get off that couch, cut your Netflix time and go out with family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, or even alone. It does not matter where, when and with whom. What matters is that you be on your feet. Choose your favourite activity and make it a journey - a journey of social interaction, self-discovery, fun and enjoyment. Remember, every movement is a step closer to better health. It doesn't require a lifestyle change, and it need not be 30 minutes at a stretch. Take the stairs, park your car a few metres away, go for a jog or make it a group effort to make you accountable. Five minutes here and ten minutes there will add up to put you on the path to good health. Let physical activity be a daily routine in your life and your family's which will ultimately cascade down to society. Exercise is the mantra of healthy living. It will help improve the quality of life and create a sense of positivity and well-being. So, get out of your sloth and get moving. Here's to a healthier and happier Dubai.
