The number of international visitors who came to Abu Dhabi in 2019 went up by 10.5 percent to 11.35 million, buoyed by guests who arrived in the UAE capital for business conventions and events.

From January to December 2019, Abu Dhabi received 2.83 million overnight visitors and 8.53 million same-day visitors, according to figures released by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT- Abu Dhabi).

The year saw 5.1 million guests checking into Abu Dhabi’s 168 hotels and hotel apartments, up by 2.1 percent compared to 2018.

With the high visitor arrivals, hotel occupancy rate rose by 1.6 percent, while the average length of stay increased by 1.8 percent to 2.6 nights, and total revenues increased by 6.6 percent to5.8 billion UAE dirhams ($1.58 billion).

“These outstanding results were underpinned by some world-class, exceptional events presented in the UAE capital across 2019,” said Saood Al Hosani, acting undersecretary at DCT-Abu Dhabi, in a statement.

“These events helped elevate Abu Dhabi’s global standing and reputation and contributed massively to our guest metrics, resulting once more in a record-breaking year in terms of visitation to the UAE capital,” she added.

Source markets

India, China, the UK and the US remained the top foreign source markets for hotel guests.

Meanwhile, Bahrain, Russia, Ukraine and South Korea were the fastest-growing markets between 2017 and 2019.

The Indian market posted an 8.2 percent increase over 2018, with over 450,000 hotel guests, and the United States saw a 5.1 percent increase from a year earlier.
