A major campaign to raise awareness about early screening of colon cancer has been launched in Bahrain.

It was launched by Supreme Council for Health (SCH) president Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa at The Avenues, in the presence of senior Health Ministry officials.

The GDN reported last week that the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) is carrying out the campaign in co-operation with the ministry and in partnership with National Non-communicable Diseases Control Committee.

Dr Shaikh Mohammed said colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world and the second most common type of cancer in Bahrain.

He stressed the importance of the national campaign which aims at increasing the chances of recovery and reducing the financial costs of treating patients before they spread cancer.

National Health Regulatory Authority chief executive Dr Mariam Al Jalahma stressed the importance of enhancing community awareness to help early detection.

In the first phase special kits are being distributed to health centres in Muharraq, which will in turn hand them to patients to collect stool samples.

These will then be analysed at KHUH, which will then inform health centres of the results.

An estimated 5,000 Bahraini patients fall into that category in Muharraq alone.
