AMMAN — The government on Sunday signed a soft loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB), amounting to 59 million euros, to support the public health sector in responding to the repercussions of the pandemic, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh, representing the government, and Minister of Health Nathir Obeidat, representing the beneficiary, signed the agreement.

In a press briefing, the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation said that the funding contributes to attending to the needs of the Ministry of Health pertaining to purchasing vaccines, personal protective equipment, paramedic devices and tools utilised by epidemiological investigation teams.

Shraideh expressed appreciation of the EIB’s continuous support for Jordan that comes in the form of soft financing, offering a grace period and a five-year extended period.

The minister also noted that, over the last years, the EIB has funded a number of feasibility studies and projects in vital sectors, adding that the bank is considering increasing its help to Jordan in tackling the current conditions caused by the spread of the coronavirus.

EIB officials stressed that the financing represents the bank’s commitment to assisting the Kingdom and its ability to handle external variables such the COVID-19.
