Arab Finance: Egypt and Greece are working to hire an international consultancy office to carry out feasibility studies for the $4 billion electricity interconnection project between the two countries, Asharq Business reported on March 12th, citing 3 unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

These offices include: the Électricité de France (EDF), the Canadian Elia Grid, the Italian CESI, DNVGL, Germany’s LAHMEYER, the Irish EBSI, and other 4 Greek, Belgian, Chinese, and American offices.

“Selecting a consultant is the most important step of the project,” one of the sources said, adding that “after the completion of the technical feasibility studies and cable route, tenders will be launched equally between Egypt and Greece to choose suppliers to carry out the interconnection process.”

In 2021, Egypt and Greece signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build a large undersea power cable linking the two countries, which is the first agreement of its kind signed between Europe and Africa in the southeastern Mediterranean.

The project will transfer clean energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece, and Athens will use part of the energy for industrial uses
