(TAP)- Installation works of the first gas turbine at Mornaguia power plant, Borj El Amri, started Wednesday. The production capacity of this gas turbine, due to come into operation in June 2019, is of 312 megawatts.

A second gas turbine with the same production capacity will be placed next month, said Minister of Small and Medium- Sized Enterprises Slim Feriani.

The 660 MTD power plant project is underway over an area of 10 hectares; it is aimed to meet a growing demand for electrical power, increase national energy production and reduce energy imports.

The Mornaguia power plant project will help generate about 100 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs and enhance technical capacities of industrial companies involved in its implementation, the Minister said.

CEO of the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (French: STEG) Moncef Harrabi said this new power plant will contribute at least 20% to the national installed electricity generation capacity.

There is an upward trend in electricity demand in Tunisia with about four thousand megawatts in the summer season, he said in this vein.

Harrabi also spoke about Rades power station which works are in progress; the first phase is expected to come to an end in June 2019. Tunisia, he said, will secure self-sufficiency in electricity production with the coming into operation of the power stations of Borj El Amri-El Mornaguia, Radès and Skhira. The Skhira power station project will be put into motion in 2021.
