Muscat: The Sultanate’s capital city Muscat will be have 70 per cent coverage of high-speed optical fibre this year, said a top official of the Oman Broadband Company (OBC).
Eng. Said bin Abdullah Al Manthri, CEO of OBC, added that the target coverage in the strategic plan is 85 per cent until the end of 2020. “Work in Muscat is proceeding in full swing, thanks to the good performance of the company, and we will reach the required ratio before the specified time.”
The OBC cooperates with the power, water and wastewater firms to utilise their projects in setting up fibre optic service as it targets 30 per cent coverage outside Muscat, looking to provide the service in Salalah’s Al Sa’ada area by October end, he said.
OBC’s fibre optic service serves more than 200,000 housing units in Muscat now, while it will serve 100,000 to 150,000 units outside Muscat.
As for the Wilayat of Duqm, he said that there is an agreement with the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm to provide the new buildings, facilities and factories with fibre optic service, as some operators have already started to provide the service.
