Iraq intends to build a railway network in its capital Baghdad as part of post-war plans to reconstruct and develop its infrastructure, an official was reported on Thursday as saying.

The National Investment Commission (NIC) is planning to invite global companies to execute the project on an “investment basis”, NIC’s chairman Salar Amin said.

He told the official Iraqi news agency the network would also be extended to link the capital with other governorates in the country.

“There will be large projects in Baghdad this year in partnership with serious and experienced foreign firms…they include the construction of a rail road network in Baghdad and an extended network to link the capital with other governorates,” Amin said.

He said NIC is working with the Transport Ministry to “complete administrative and legal procedures” to offer the project as an investment to international companies.
