Iraq is planning to construct a 98 km ring road around its capital Baghdad to ease traffic congestion in and around the city, according to an official statement.

The Cabinet Secretariat has awarded a design contract for the project and it would be awarded once the designs are completed, the Secretariat said in a statement carried by Aliqtisad News and other local publications.

The road will cover mostly the Southern suburbs which have been suffering from persistent road congestions, the statement said.

“This project will be executed in stages….it is a strategic project which is intended to tackle road jambs in and around the capital,” it added.
