Iraq is expected to slash time needed to construct a massive dry canal that will link its South with the North and then Turkey, according to the local press.

Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani met a government team supervising the project and representatives of a foreign company charged with preparing its designs on Wednesday to discuss progress in the 4-year project, Shafaq News and other Iraqi networks said on Thursday.

They quoted Sudani as saying the project is one of the most important schemes for the development of the transport industry in Iraq as it would largely contribute to expanding commercial activity and attracting investment.

“Sudani gave instructions to speed up the project and slash time needed for its execution because it is one of the strategic projects for the government,” they said.

The “Dry Canal” will link the Southern Faw Port, under construction since 2020, with ports in North Iraq and with Turkish ports with the aim of boosting exports and imports.
