After dominating the food search and discovery segment in the UAE, Zomato is now eyeing an even larger chunk of the UAE's fast-growing food and beverage sector. Earlier today, Zomato announced the launch of its online ordering services in the UAE, as it looks to move its enormous call ordering volumes over to its mobile app.
Over 600k calls are made to restaurants in the UAE every month through Zomato's app and website. Zomato lists over 16,000 restaurants in the UAE, featuring over 400,000 ratings and 150,000 reviews by users.
The food and beverage sector in the UAE is expected to grow by around 4% annually to USD 13.2 billion in 2018, according to a recent report by KPMG. Over 60% of the consumers in the UAE order takeaway or home delivery, making this a great market for Zomato's online ordering product. Foodies in Dubai can now use the Zomato app or website to order whatever they're craving, from a selection of over 500 restaurants, including Tony Roma's, Sheikh & Shake, Miyabi Sushi & Bento, and Punjabi By Nature, to name a few. Foodies can now also use their debit/credit cards to pay for their deliveries online.
The India-based startup, which has to date raised USD 163 million in funds through Info Edge India, Sequoia Capital and Vy Capital, is targeting 15,000 orders per day across the UAE by the end of the current fiscal. A significant portion of these orders is expected to come from Dubai.
Zomato launched its operations in Dubai in September 2012, and has since been the de-facto choice for consumers looking for restaurants to eat at, or order in from, in the UAE. Zomato has a presence across 22 countries and helps over 90 million monthly visitors search for great places to eat at. Building on its powerful search and discovery product, Zomato will now allow people to order food online for home delivery or take-away using Zomato Order in select cities in India and the UAE, and will soon launch these services in Australia and South Africa.
The Zomato Order app is currently available for iOS and Android in Dubai, and can be used to order from an array of delivery-based and takeaway restaurants. It will soon be rolled out in other cities in the UAE. Earlier this year, Zomato Cashless was introduced in Dubai, enabling customers to make cashless payments at restaurants via the Zomato app.
