Wednesday, 29h September 2010: The Western Region Development Council (WRDC) - the central coordinating body leading development and promoting opportunity in Al Gharbia, the Western Region of Abu Dhabi - have completed the initial stages of the awareness and rollout of their Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) for all staff, during a workshop entitled "Environment, Health and Safety Management System" held in Fairmont Bab al Bahr - Abu Dhabi.
The day-long workshop, presented by Anderw Glass from "RSK Group PLC", introduced the WRDC staff to EHSMS essential requirements and the key principles of EHS risk audit, assessment and management. The workshop was attended by H.E. Mohamed Hamad Bin Azzan Al Mazrouei, Director General of WRDC, and all WRDC Department Directors and Section Heads.
EHSMS is an integrated management system that takes into consideration all aspects related to the protection of the environment, protection of human health and safety of workers and the community at large.
H.E. Mohamed Hamad Bin Azzan Al Mazrouei, said:"We are very pleased to be taking this first step towards achieving full certification of WRDC in the Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Management System. Our staffs are our key resource, and as such we are dedicated to providing them a safe and healthy working environment, while the Councils ongoing implementation of the EHSMS programme further adds to our commitment to preserving the environment for the benefit of future generations".
Al Mazrouei noted that the Council has completed all the requirements of EAD to start applying this system. Moreover, the Council seeks to obtain ISO certificates (18001-14001) to be the main criterion when applying the Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS)
The Executive Council of Abu Dhabi Emirate approved the Abu Dhabi Emirate EHS Policy in 2006 and nominated the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) as responsible for supervising the development and implementation of the EHSMS throughout the Emirate. The objective of the policy is to achieve excellence in the management and protection of the environment, health and safety, through partnership between all government and private sectors to ensure all activities within Abu Dhabi are undertaken in a responsible, safe and sustainable manner.
