The lightest 'lead-free' x-ray apron in the world, designed to combat back and shoulder problems among medical staff and limit the spread of hospital superbugs, is being supplied by APC Cardiovascular.

Up to 30% lighter than lead equivalents but still offering full body protection, the unique range of Xenolite™ NL aprons have been introduced to relieve back and shoulder stress; a common problem caused when garments are worn for long periods of time.

They also come in a range of selected fabric coverings including a tough, cleanable, rubber-coated woven nylon, which has an anti-bacterial coating that kills most hospital bacteria such as MRSA and E-coli.

Designed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals, the Xenolite NL range comes in three different styles - tabard, vest/skirt and full wrap aprons - and a wide variety of colours and patterns; allowing departments and individuals to choose a style that suits their working practices and personal tastes.

Radiographer Jenny Armstrong, Cath Lab, Royal Sussex County Hospital, who regularly uses the apron talks about the benefits of using the Xenolite NL range.

She said: "The Xenolite aprons are perfect for people who suffer with back problems. They are extremely light and really help reduce stress on the back, compared to other models. As someone who suffers from low back pain, I would certainly recommend it."

As well as being better for healthcare professionals, the aprons are also environmentally friendly and are made from 100% recyclable materials.

Managing Director of APC Cardiovascular, Derrick Ebden, said: "The Xenolite aprons have been tested and approved by government and private testing agencies in over 10 countries and has been proved to be the lightest-weight x-ray aprons in the world offering full protection."

APC Cardiovascular, a leading supplier of innovative medical products and equipment to the UK and international markets, has a wide range of radiation protection garments designed to protect healthcare workers.

Included in the range is RADPAD® - a sterile, lead free, light weight, and repositionable radiation protection shield - that is placed directly on the patient and gives the physician protection from the ever present scattered radiation.
