Potential users in the United Arab Emirates could reach nearly a million students by 2015

Development presents massive opportunities for technology providers as region's student population grows

Dubai, United Arab Emirates; 26 February 2013 - Classroom instruction across GCC schools will increasingly utilise mobile devices as smart learning solutions gain traction in the education sector throughout the region.

"The UAE is at the forefront of the move to digital education in the classroom with the launch of the Smart Learning program in public schools throughout the Emirates," said Mohammed Gheyath, the Director General of Smart learning programme.

He added: "The project is a significant step towards elevating UAE academic standards to the highest levels, which is part of the UAE's Vision 2021 and was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Through this initiative, the UAE government aims to transform the education sector into one that stimulates intellectual growth, promotes scientific research, innovation and critical thinking that can help adapt to changing social and human capacity needs."

Education stakeholders will have a preview of the latest smart learning tools from world leading providers as well as the latest advances and best practices on mobile learning at the GESS 2013 exhibition which is being held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The event will take place from 5-7 March 2013 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, highlighting the theme "Smart Learning and Technological Advances in Education".

"One of the key drivers for the widespread adoption of smart learning tools is the capability of the teachers to incorporate smart learning tools and technologies in classroom instruction. For this reason, we have gathered the world's leading experts on the use of mobile learning devices in teaching," said Matt Thompson, Project Director, F&E Group, organisers of Gulf Educational Supplies and Solutions (GESS), the region's leading education exhibition.

The anticipated rise in adoption of smart learning tools in the classroom presents massive opportunities for smart learning solutions and technology providers who can leverage the growing student population in the GCC. According to the latest education industry estimates, the student population in the primary and secondary school sector in the UAE could reach nearly a million by 2015.

This opportunity takes on a staggering proportion in Saudi Arabia, which could see its primary and secondary school education swell to 6.6 million in two years. Following the two biggest markets is Oman which will see its student population in the same sector reach 670,000; next is Kuwait with 545,000, and then Bahrain and Qatar with close to 200,000 each.

Among the featured speakers include David Kirtlan, a certified Apple Distinguished Educator, who will lead sessions on how the iPad can be used to effectively teach languages and literacy, as well as maths and sciences.

GESS AL Nadi, a special section of the exhibition, will also provide its members, many of whom are key decision makers in their respective schools and countries, the opportunity to discuss at length their smart learning and technology requirements with leading providers such as Samsung, Microsoft, Edutech, Rosetta Stone, ICC, Core Education, among others.

Last year, GESS and GEF attracted 6,000 key decision makers and ministerial delegations from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. This includes a cross section of teachers, heads of department and heads of school as well as procurement managers, school owners and bursars.  Due to the high volume of attendees expected to come this year, visitors are encouraged to register for free at www.gesseducation.com.
