Study showing importance of pill in reducing ovarian cancer by 50% discussed

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - 09 November 2010: Organized by Dubai Health Authority in collaboration with Bayer Schering Pharma AG, and held in JW Marriott Hotel, Dubai, the Emirates Obs-Gyne & Fertility Forum 2010 (EOFF) concluded its activities earlier this week with discussions and recommendations indicating multiple studies on value-added health benefits of the pill, which contributes 50% lower risk of ovarian cancer.

According to Dr. Roula Ahmed Al-Shurafa, EOFF Vice-Chairman and Early Embryonic Diagnosis Specialist, it is a medical "must do" for all pregnant women to conduct a fine ultrasound diagnostic screening at 20 to 22 weeks of pregnancy, for reassuring and alerting parents in cases of abnormal and isolated findings in ages less than 35 years. Dr. Al-Shurafa made it clear that it is of utmost importance to undergo Doppler Sonography in Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), obligatory for all cases, with the need for the Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) test. Also, Antral Follicle counts have to be checked before the control and induction of ovulation, and the protocol should be changed accordingly, she added.

She said that the recommendations stated that 50% of the major abnormalities can be detected by the end of the first semester of the pregnancy. The Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery (MIRS) assists in operations of the internal reproductive organs except the ovary, and laparoscopic surgery has become the mainstay of surgical management of almost all benign and some malignant gynaecological pathologies, it was noted. The controversial issues of twins' management depend on local conditions and facilities, and since the quality of life improves sperm, there is a must for exercising and eating healthy foods to reach the ideal weight. Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is an effective tool for Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART), Dr. Roula Al-Shurafa said. She also spoke about the HIV infections over the past 25 years, and how to deal with pregnant patients who were diagnosed with this virus and the foetuses impacted by it.

EOFF underlined that Chlamydia Trachomatis infections are among the most prevalent of all Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Discussions at the Forum revealed that there is an impact of intramural leiomyomata on pregnancy outcome in ART, and Hyperprolactinemia (HP) is a cause of uterine bleeding, therefore it is advisable to test for it.
