State-of-the-art facility to open in Q2 2007
Dubai November 14: Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a member of Tatweer, and the UK's Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have signed an agreement for the development and fit out of the Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.
The Dubai branch of one of the world's most famous eye hospitals is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2007 in the Al Razi Medical Complex at phase one of Dubai Healthcare City. It will be the first overseas branch of Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Ahmad Sharaf, Senior Vice President for Energy and Healthcare, Tatweer said: "Our aim at DHCC is to support and develop the medical sector in the region. This agreement, with the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, reflects the vision and strategy of DHCC in offering state of the art healthcare services.
"The agreement is in line with our strategy to sign key partnerships locally, regionally and internationally, and to develop DHCC into an international hub for the finest healthcare services."
Moorfields Eye Hospital London was founded in 1804, and opened in 1805. It is the oldest and one of the largest centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world. Last year the hospital carried out over 23,000 ophthalmic operations.
"We are a world-renowned centre for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research," said Ian Balmer, Chief Executive, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. "Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai will provide the same high standard of care as is available in London. It is a branch of Moorfields, not a startup offshoot."
Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai will be seamlessly integrated with its London headquarters. In addition to its Dubai-based consultant staff, visiting consultants and telemedicine links will ensure patients receive world-class diagnosis and treatment. The hospital will be equipped with the latest ophthalmic technology.
"We intend to be a provider of choice for patients with eye disease," said Chris Canning, Chief Executive and Medical Director, Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai. "We will be at the leading edge of innovation in ophthalmic practice, offering new models of patient care and accessible and cost-effective high-quality ophthalmic services.
"We will also work closely with the Harvard Medical School Dubai Centre to support post graduate training in Ophthalmology, as well as developing and participating in world class research with the Institute of Ophthalmology in London and other academic partners."

About Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Moorfields was founded in 1804 and opened in 1805. It is the oldest and one of the largest centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world.
More patients in the UK go to Moorfields than to any other eye hospital or clinic because of its world-famous reputation. This is based on the expertise of its clinical staff and the cutting-edge research taking place on site. Over half the ophthalmologists practising in the UK, and many more overseas, have received specialist training at Moorfields.
Moorfields offers a comprehensive and seamless ophthalmic service that is internationally renowned. Complex ophthalmic cases (tertiary referrals) come to it from across the UK and further afield. In partnership with the Institute of Ophthalmology (part of University College London), Moorfields manages the largest ongoing ophthalmic research programme in the world.
All of this is only possible because of the unique combination of doctors, scientists and a variety of other clinicians, supported by state-of-the-art research at the Institute of Ophthalmology, that work together to provide a dedicated service.
