The first batch of students from the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program graduated yesterday from the College of Medicine and Health Science (CMHS) in United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). The graduating class consisted of 12 students from across the UAE. It is the first and only program of its kind in the country that is geared towards producing licenced pharmacists and new pharmacy graduates which further develops their therapeutic and clinical medication skills. The training these pharmacists acquired will help them develop as medication experts, and integral members of hospital healthcare teams.

The two year program is coordinated by CMHS and Tawam Hospital. The program consists of 1 year of courses covering core pathophysiology and therapeutics knowledge at CMHS followed by a year of clinical rotations which consists of 6 mandatory clinical rotations, 4 elective clinical rotations and 2 months of clinical research.  The core rotations include experience in a Hospital Pharmacy (IV & TPN), Ambulatory Pharmacy, General Internal Medicine, Medicine Intensive Care, Surgery & Surgical Intensive Care, and Paediatrics. Elective rotations include Adult Infectious Disease, Paediatrics Infectious Diseases, Paediatric Intensive Care, Cardiology, Oncology, Emergency Medicine & Toxicology, Neurology / Psychiatry & Women Health.  All rotations are conducted, and supervised by clinical pharmacists at Tawam Hospital.

Prof. Abdu Adem, Program Director said, "This program is designed not only to extend professional knowledge but also to serve as a vehicle to deliver desired core clinical skills, expertise and experience in a contemporary clinical pharmacy practice."

The UAEU Provost & Chief Academic Officer, Professor Mohamed Yousif Baniyas stated that, "UAEU is committed to the formation of competent individuals who will render their professional expertise in providing adequate healthcare services to the community, through the knowledge and skills acquired from dynamic mentors."
