Abu Dhabi, July 6, 2004: Emirates Telecommunications and Marine Services (e-marine) is proud to announce that its three cable ships - CS Etisalat, CS Umm Al Anber and CS Niwa - have been awarded the International Ship Security Certificate. The measures taken to enhance the ships' security were developed in association with ABS Consulting Dubai and approved and certified by Bureau Veritas.
Mr Omar Jassim Bin Kalban, CEO of e-marine, said: "We are pleased to have received the full ISSC for our cable ships and proud that e-marine is among the first ship owners to have fully security registered UAE flagged ships."
The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) is a key security arrangement all ships were required to have in place by July 1, 2004. The code's aim is to ensure the security of ships and port facilities. It does this through a risk management exercise that determines what security measures are appropriate.
The code also aims to provide a standard and consistent framework for evaluating risk, enabling governments to offset changes in threat with changes in vulnerability for ships and port facilities. Ships have to carry the International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) indicating that they comply with the requirements of SOLAS chapter XI-2 and part A of the ISPS code.
The implementation of the ISPS Code on e-marine's fleet involved training ship security officers (SSO) and company security officers (CSO), an exercise that has been successfully completed.
