Doha, Qatar, May 28, 2014

United Development Company (UDC), one of the largest Qatari shareholding companies and the master developer of The Pearl-Qatar, has completed all studies and assessments pertaining to the tenders put forward and announced last March for the construction of two additional mosques at The Pearl-Qatar.

Located in the vicinity of the "Qatar Cool" plant and the Isola Dana islets at The Pearl-Qatar, The construction of the two mosques was planned as a result to the community's increasing demand for more religious facilities proportionate to the growing number of residents. Each mosque shall accommodate up to 300 worshipers, and implementation of blueprints shall start as soon as approved designs are returned to winning bidders.

Engineer Badr Mohammed Al Meer, UDC Acting Chief Executive Officer said he is thrilled about the fast-moving process leading up to the construction of the mosques. "We are very excited and at the same time extremely busy with finalizing the examination of bids for the construction of the two new mosques," he said.

"With The Pearl-Qatar becoming home to more residents and a hub for services in the budding West Bay area, there comes a subsequent need for more community facilities, and people in Qatar tend to be highly spiritual, so we planned the building of two more mosques in the hope this would give residents and visitors the convenience and relief they need to perform their prayers."

Al Meer added that the careful dispersion of the three mosques on the Island as well as their design will provide a comfortable place where worshippers can come and have peace.

The project encompasses the design and construction of two mosques  comprising of a ground floor considered as public praying area and an upper floor housing  the mosque's religious staff including the Imam (the Islamic worship leader), in an overall area of 1080 square meters for each mosque, including comprehensive support services.

The scope of work defined by the tender covers all electromechanical services and associated external schemes including paved walkways and the main sanctuary, in conformity with the standards and specifications defined by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

The technical submissions related to the design and construction of the two mosques  are currently being reviewed by the qualified UDC Tenders Committee,  after which financial offers  put forward by the shortlisted bidders will serve to identify the winning tenderers who will in turn be announced by mid-June.

UDC is equally working on the expansion of the Grand Mosque at the Island's entrance, to allow more people to gather for prayers. To this end, renovation works will encompass raising the mosque's capacity from 1,200 worshippers currently, to 3,000 once completed.
