Beirut, Lebanon: The meeting was attended by a delegation of the Bank of Lebanon, headed by Dr. Youssef Al-Khalil, and a delegation from the Association of Banks in Lebanon (ABL), headed by Dr. Salim Sfeir. The talks aimed at unifying the numbers from the Government’s Financial Recovery Plan and those of the banks.
The Head of the General Labor Union, Hassan Fakih expressed some of the workers’ concerns and demands. The Minister of Finance stressed that he would undertake the required follow-up steps.
The concerns of people raised included the impact of the rise in the price of bread and the inability of depositors to deposit their money. Workers further are worried about expected job losses due to the deteriorating economic situation, the closure of enterprises and the evaporation of wages that resulted in the loss of purchasing power.
Mr. Fakih additionally conveyed the demands of farmers, with a particular emphasis on tobacco and potato farmers, who have been unable to sell their produce.
