MUSCAT The joint International Workshop on Mathematics entitled "New Developments in Number Theory and in Applied Mathematics" to be held from 18-22 February at The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) and at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) will focus on scientific lectures and at the same time a number of lectures will be open to the general public. "We have included several presentations that will be open for the general public, such as Solving Sudokus or E-learning. For these presentations we would like to invite university students in sciences but as well school students and science teachers," said Professor Dr. Bernhard Heim, who is as an expert in number theory and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Science at GUtech. Prof. Heim is the Chairman of the joint GUtech/SQU Workshop.
The organizers of the International Workshop want to create enthusiasm for Mathematics especially among the young generation in Oman. To inspire science students, a number of MSc students from Oman, Germany and Japan will present their findings of their research projects in Mathematics. "We would like to give the Master's students from Oman, Japan and Germany the possibility of presenting their research findings to a large number of internationally recognized scientists and on the other hand other students in natural sciences can get an idea about different fields of research. In addition, we would like to promote scientific networking especially between the Sultanate of Oman, Germany and Japan" said Professor Dr. Bernhard Heim.
During the five-day Workshop around 37 international experts in number theory and recognized researchers of applied fields in Mathematics will give presentations about their latest research results. The International Workshop on Mathematics is sponsored by SQU, GUtech, The Research Council (TRC). "We are looking forward to sponsor such an important International Workshop on Mathematics in Oman, where a number of experts from all over the world will come together and exchange their expertise in a basic science field that is very valuable for Oman," said Dr. Talal Al-Balushi, Director for International Relations of The Research Council.
Several professors of GUtech and SQU will also give presentations on e-learning and related topics. For example Prof. Dr. Volker Enss, Professor for Mathematics at GUtech, will give a presentation about an interactive online Mathematics software for engineering freshmen, called MUMIE, which was developed by Professor Volker and a group of scientists in Berlin (Germany).
The Sudoku will be held on Sunday, 19 February at 5.50 pm at GUtech in Al Athaiba. The entry will be free of charge. Interested university students, high school students and teachers can register for the workshop on www.mathoman.gutech.edu.om or send an email to: mathoman2012@gutech.edu.om
