15 April 2013
After its success of last year, GISWORX Mobile Developer Challenge (GMDC) once again returned to GISWORX, the regional GIS and IT event, organized by the TIEM division of GISTEC. GISWORX '13 was held between the 2nd and 4th of April 2013 at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai. One of its main sub-events, GMDC took place on the 3rd of April in the main exhibition area of the Al Bustan Rotana. Gathering eight teams of university students from all over the UAE, the event allowed these students to learn about GIS and its applications, incorporating it in the mobile apps they have developed and submitted for the competition. The contestants developed applications on different platforms related to recycling (environment), productivity, tourism and transportation.

Taking the first prize, Yashasvi Vedula and Dipanshu Gupta from BITS Pilani, Dubai developed an Android mobile application to keep track of the location and speed of people or a group of people through their mobile. The application uses the phone's accelerometer to calculate speed and GPS to track coordinates. Reporting is done through SMS.  The second placer, Rana Nasir and Rana AlAfify from the University of Sharjah developed a Windows mobile application that can be used by environment firms or agencies to locate restaurants or shops who have used cooking up for recycling.  The third placers, Chayanika Khatua and Roopal Chouhan, also from BITS Pilani, Dubai, developed an Android based mobile application to help tourists or residents in Dubai locate landmarks, shopping malls, or restaurants in and around each stations of the Dubai Metro.

There is also a professional side underlined by the GMDC every year considering that students get to be exposed to GIS experts and professionals. Anoop Idicula and Ayman Abu Nimry from the GIS team of ADCO were invited to illustrate that point by sharing an application that his company has been building and working on recently.

While this year's goal was to maintain and stay faithful to the original format, there was also more students participating and many more applications presented to the public.  With GISWORX'13 focusing on mobile technology it was only logical that GISTEC'S team would introduce a new application for the public called, "GISWORX".  This mobile application available for free download on Apple App Store and Google Play was shown during the event and Shaikh Shadab a member of GISTEC explained how to use this application and the importance of this tool for the future of GISWORX, "We wanted to build for our participants something that would last and that they could use all throughout the year and because our event gets more and more attended on a yearly basis this application came right on time."
