Ras Al Khaimah, UAE: Ras Al Khaimah is set to host a DP World Tour tournament for the first time this February, where some of the Tour’s biggest stars will battle it out at the Al Hamra Golf Club.
With a global schedule featuring a minimum of 45 tournaments in 27 different countries across the 2022 season, the DP World Tour is the main men’s professional golf Tour of the European Tour group. Formerly known as the European Tour, the 2022 DP World Tour schedule includes five Rolex Series events, along with four Major Championships, two World Golf Championship events and three tournaments as well as tournaments staged around the world.
With the Qatar Masters, scheduled for February 10-13, having been postponed until later this spring, a second USD 2 million tournament will also be hosted in Ras Al Khaimah. The Ras Al Khaimah Classic will follow the Ras Al Khaimah Championship (February 3-6), with both events taking place at Al Hamra Golf Club. With these back-to-back tournaments, the DP World Tour’s Middle East swing remains at four events, with the Ras Al Khaimah double-header preceded by the first two Rolex Series events of 2022 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Danny Willett, Bernd Wiesberger and Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard will lead the field when the inaugural Ras Al Khaimah Championship presented by Phoenix Capital heralds another exciting new chapter on the DP World Tour. Also joining the field are former Ryder Cup Captains Thomas Bjørn, who led Europe to victory at Le Golf National in 2018, and eight-time European Number One Colin Montgomerie. Al Hamra Golf Club previously hosted the European Challenge Tour from 2016 to 2018, with the Challenge Tour Grand Final taking place on the Peter Harradine-designed layout in 2018.
Adding to an impressive roster of sports events, Ras Al Khaimah has a solid track-record, emerging stronger from the pandemic and putting in place measures to ensure the safety of guests and participants at large-scale sports events. Other prestigious events hosted in the Emirate include The Road to Ras Al Khaimah (final of the European Tour Challenge Tour), the world’s fastest half marathon, The Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, UAE Cycling Championship and the UAE Tour – all of which play a significant role in boosting sporting tourism in the Emirate. Multiple editions of Tough Mudder and Desert Warrior Challenge have also been hosted highlighting the growing popularity of the Emirate as a regional sports destination.
