The Sulfur Recovery Expansion Project (SRX) will enter a new important phase when the detailed engineering and construction contract for the project is awarded. The project, initiated in the middle of 1998, aims at reducing the sulfur emissions from the LNG plant to a minimum, meeting or exceeding all environmental requirements. The completion of the SRX unit is planned for the second quarter of 2002. The total cost of the project is around US$90 million, making it the largest Qatargas project since the completion of the third LNG train in March 1998

The combination of less hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and more heavy hydrocarbons in the acid gas, caused the two installed sulfur recovery units to operate at a recovery of only 85 to 93 percent  of the sulfur in the feed. As a result,  a study was initiated to determine an alternative process, which would meet the environmental requirements.  The Sulfur Recovery Expansion Project is the result of this initiative. In addition to achieving the required sulfur recovery, the new SRX facilities are designed to accommodate the future increased production from the debottlenecked LNG plant, which will be 125 percent of current capacity.

"The SRX Project is another demonstration of Qatargas' long-term commitment to environmental excellence," says Manager Technical, Sh. Nasser. H. Al-Thani. The uncertainty of future feed gas composition, integration of a new facilities within an operating plant, and the search for a new and improved technology for sulfur recovery made this project incredibly challenging. I'm very pleased by the good progress of this project, which is a result of the hard work and technical expertise of the entire SRX project team, headed by Project Manager, Jack  Failla. Its work, supported throughout by members of the Operations, Technical, Legal and Finance Departments, has clearly demonstrated the significant benefits of an integrated team approach to project implementation"
