A successful Royal College 8th Scientific International Meeting of Obstetrics and Gynecology, held in Abu Dhabi for the first time last week, is OWED to the Chairman of the RCOG UAE Representative Committee Dr. Mohammad El Sheikh.  His strong and steady leadership provided direction for the conference and Al Corniche Hospital's nine pre-conference workshops. Corniche Hospital is in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine and is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The event, which is held every two years, took place in the Arabian Gulf for the first time.  It was supported by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi's Health Services Company.

Staying calm during a busy time is not unusual for Dr. El Sheikh.  With 28 years of experience in the practice he has risen to levels of leadership across the board.   He is Chairman of the RCOG UAE Representative Committee, a consultant at Corniche Hospital, has been a member of RCOG for more than 10 years and he is one of the key founders for the UAE Representative Committee.  "We are privileged to have someone of Dr. Sheikh's caliber as part of the Corniche Hospital team", says Ron Lavater, Chief Executive Officer at Al Corniche Hospital, "He has benefitted the entire hospital and the community it serves".

The multidisciplinary workshops, which ran in parallel streams, were organized by the UAE Representative Committee with the support of Al Corniche Hospital.  They are CME accredited and were attended by over 150 doctors and nurses at the Armed Forces Officers Club. Specialized presentations were given by doctors and midwives from Europe, the US, Asia and the Middle East addressing: Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, Electronic Fetal Heart Monitoring (CTG), Perineal Repair, Master Class Leadership, Diabetes in Pregnancy, Gynecology Ultrasound, Office Hysteroscopy, and Sonographic Assessment of the Fetus in Emergency (SAFE).

When asked about his involvement with RCOG and some of the activities held here in the UAE, Dr. El Sheikh announced a first time Pilot Study conducting the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) was held in Abu Dhabi early November.  He proudly states, "This was an extremely successful event, 40 people sat in on the exam, and this was also owing to Al Corniche Hospital's financial support.  Relieving some of the financial issues that previously prevented this exam from being held here, Al Corniche Hospital really came through as anadvocate for providing exemplary healthcare through continued education."

Dr. El Sheikh is also tremendously pleased that the RCOG Conference was held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, "Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, The Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation, President of the General Women's Union, President of The Higher Council for Motherhood and Childhood was honored during the RCOG Conference for her continued support and commitment to improving women's health throughout the UAE."

"We are grateful have hosted a series of pre-conference workshops under the Al Corniche Hospital umbrella for participants", says Dr. Judy Lee, Chief Medical Officer at Al Corniche Hospital, "We were especially honored to witness Her Highness, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak being awarded a fellowship at the RCOG conference.  The existence of Al Corniche Hospital is a tribute for her dedication to the well-being of women in the UAE."
