Sharjah, UAE. 12 October 2011. - A seminar on the use of Geographic Information System in spatial thinking concluded yesterday in the University of Sharjah. Organized by Technology Integration Events Management (TIEM), in cooperation with University of Sharjah, this academic workshop especially designed for students and faculty staff focused on the importance of GIS in today's world and the need to introduce it in several disciplines to develop critical thinking mindset among the participants.
Esri Global Education Manager Dr. Michael Gould gave an introduction on the history of GIS followed by some examples of the development and use of GIS in business, health and public safety, facility management, utilities, among other industries. Projects and works of different universities, libraries and museums in the GIS field were also showcased during the event. Gould emphasized on the importance of GIS in critical thinking and promoting the spatial approach of any problem for best solutions.
The event aimed to increase awareness among students and faculty staff on the business of the corporate sector through the presence of GISTEC, the official Esri distributor in the UAE; GIS software world leader, Esri; and Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) who offered the attendees work placement opportunities after presenting practical examples and uses of GIS in their industry.
The recently held seminar was organized in line with an important part of GISTEC's corporate social responsibility - to spread awareness among students about GIS technology.
