Providing students the opportunity to develop skills by applying theory to practice

Manama, Bahrain 24 May 2010: University students from the Singapore Management University (SMU) and the University of Bahrain (UoB) recently visited the Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) Bahrain's iconic landmark, in order to understand the elements of innovative and sustainable architectural design incorporated in the state-of-the-art structure.

Hosted by BWTC's architects and engineers ATKINS as well as BWTC's managing and leasing agents DTZ, the students were given a brief presentation on the engineering technicalities of the project and a tour of the building.  The students learnt how BWTC, is the first in the world to suspend electricity-generating wind turbines between two commercial towers' structures, surpassing existing construction boundaries as well as the commercial aspects of the project. The three 29-metre diameter turbines provide 11-15% of the towers' energy requirements and are now set to auto-mode, supplying power to the 50 storey twin office towers.

The direct on site exposure helped the students to learn about BWTC's unique ground breaking design and Bahrain's commitment to sustainable development.  As part of the visit, the students met with the BWTC engineers to learn about the technical aspects of the wind turbine operation.

During the tour, the students also gained knowledge of how the development cleverly combines the essential elements of business and leisure with cutting-edge corporate offices and leisure amenities including exceptional shopping, casual dining restaurants, cafes, a health spa, a five-star hotel and a range of other services.

Recently, BWTC received the 2010 winner of 'Best Use of Lighting - Exterior' Award for its innovative architectural lighting design illuminating the exterior of the structure, at the inaugural PALME Middle East Awards.
