Yesterday, a group of 19 Gulf for Good participants preparing for charity challenges in Borneo and Nepal completed a tough hike up and down the 36 floors of one of the UAE's most distinctive landmarks - the Dusit Dubai Hotel.
The Borneo Challenge, from July 5th - 13th, will test participant's endurance and stamina levels in a tough mountain biking, kayaking, rafting and hiking adventure that will raise funds for Borneo Child Aid. The hiking part of the challenge includes an ascent to the summit of South East Asia's highest mountain - Mount Kinabalu.
The Everest Base Camp Challenge, from October 11th - 25th, is one of the most demanding adventures on the Gulf for Good roster. Challengers will be tested to the extreme on this on the 15-day trek (including altitude acclimatisation days), which will see them ascending to over 5,500 metres. Funds raised by the participants will help towards building a maternity wing for the Ilam Hospital, originally built by G4G with funds raised by earlier challenges. The hospital, located in a poor rural part of eastern Nepal, is the major provider of healthcare to over 400 thousand people living in 48 villages.
Training session leader, Ravi Chandran said, "Participants in both of these challenges need to be prepared for lots of uphill trekking, so it's very important for them to do workouts that focus attention on the muscles most used on the challenges. Stair climbing is a great way to do this. A hike to the top of the Dusit and back down is almost a challenge in itself!"
Gulf for Good Chairman, Brian Wilkie added, "Thanks to big-hearted organisations like the Dusit Dubai Hotel, we are able to offer free, appropriate, easily accessible and exciting training sessions that help to boost our participants fitness levels prior to their charity challenges. Although trekking and climbing experience are not needed for either Borneo or Everest Base Camp, physical and mental determination are both essential. So walking up and down the 36 floors of the Dusit Dubai is a brilliant way to train prior to a tough mountain trek."
Operating under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Said Al Maktoum, Gulf for Good has organised 20 charity challenges around the world since 2001. By taking part in an adventure, participants raise funds to support handpicked charities in the region where the challenge is held. Over US$ 1 million has been raised in this way for needy causes in the Gulf and across the globe.
